A Closer Look: Rickard Rakell

by Anaheim Ducks /

We know he's a prolific goal-scorer. We know he's Swedish. We know he's best buds with Hampus Lindholm. But there is more to Ducks winger Rickard Rakell than meets the eye.

Favorite thing about being a hockey player
Where should I start? I get to do what I love and have it as a job. I don't even know what I'd do for work if I wasn't a hockey player. Traveling, being with a team and playing in Anaheim. After you play hockey, you go outside and there's palm trees and beaches. I love my life right now.

Proudest accomplishment
I had a lot of fun winning the World Championship in 2018 (for Team Sweden). Also playing in the NHL All-Star Game and being a part of the All-Star Weekend was a very fun moment for me.

TV show that makes you laugh the most
The Office

Favorite movie
"The Intouchables." It's a French movie. The original one. That one gets me every time.

Secret talent
I'm master level at Mario Kart. Close to unbeatable, at least in our household. I'll beat [fiancée] Emmeli. I have all the stars on Mario Kart. I have the gold Mario, gold tires, gold kart and the gold parachute.

Best vacation
Cancun during our bye week last season, where I also got engaged.

Go-to karaoke song
For right now, I'd say "Shallow" by Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper.

If you could only eat one meal for the rest of your life…
Swedish pancakes, home-cooked … if I don't have to make them.

How many pairs of shoes do you own?
I have a lot of shoes, but I wouldn't say I'm a shoe guy. I wear a lot of sandals. [Laughs]. I probably don't have more sandals than shoes, but I might have like eight pairs.

Best concert
I went to a Rebelution [reggae rock band] concert when I played in Norfolk. It was a show, for sure. It was really good. I'll never forget it. I want to get out to see them again. I'm a big reggae guy.

Favorite foreign food
I love Asian fusion.

Who would you want to play you in a movie of your life?
I'd say Orlando Bloom.

What was your first job?
In school, I had an internship. I was a Zamboni driver in my hometown. Luckily, I didn't ruin anything. [Laughs]. With a five-minute instruction beforehand, I could probably do it again. I know the pattern.

If you could join any past or current music group …
I'd say ABBA

Who is the most intelligent person you know?
Emmeli, for sure. [Laughs]
