Once again, the Brandon Wheat Kings had to put in a little overtime to get the job done.
The Wheat Kings won 3-2 in OT for a second straight game to capture the first two home games of the series and take a 2-0 lead in their WHL Final against the Seattle Thunderbirds on Saturday.
This time it was Brandon’s Jayce Hawryluk notching the winner at 6:56 of the extra session, joining Tanner Kaspick as an OT hero in the series. For the second straight game, Brandon forced overtime after trailing 2-1 in the third period. They were 5:20 away from losing Game 2 when Tyler Coulter tied it at 2.
Devils prospect John Quenneville has been held off the scoresheet through two games, but remains second in WHL playoff scoring with 24 points (13g-11a). Teammate Nolan Patrick, who posted a shorthanded goal and an assist in Game 2, leads the league with 27 (12g-15a).
Quenneville’s seven-game point streak helped propel Brandon past Red Deer in the Eastern Conference Final, where he collected eight points in five games, including an OT winner.
Brandon is playing in its second straight WHL Final after being swept by Kelowna last season. The Wheat Kings are two wins away from claiming their first WHL crown since 1995-96.
