Recently Devils forward Kurtis Gabriel sat down with The Shared Grief Project to talk about how the loss of his father impacted him and motivated him to make it in the NHL.
Gabriel lost his father to suicide when he was only ten years old. Now, he dedicates his time to being an advocate for mental health.
"Once I was able to talk about it, I truly think that was the start of the healing process. The dam broke and that's when I realized that I needed to talk about it."
