The Devils won't have the services of defenseman Anton Volchenkov or forward Brian Rolston in today's matchup with visiting Pittsburgh, President/CEO/GM Lou Lamoriello announced today.
Volchenkov suffered a broken nose in the first period of Saturday's loss in Washington when he was struck in the face by a Nicklas Backstrom slapshot. Rolston sustained a lower body injury later in the contest.
"We will be playing with the healthy people we have here," Lamoriello said. "Volchenkov will not play. The puck that hit his face shield, broke his nose and cut his face, so he'll be out today."
Volchenkov and Rolston are both listed as day to day. Said Lamoriello of Rolston's injury: "We won't to what degree that is until after he meets with the doctors today."
Pierre-Luc Letourneau-Leblond will miss today's game to serve his one-game suspension for instigating a fight in the final five minutes of Saturday's game. Lamoriello confirmed that Letourneau-Leblond was placed on waivers today, but said a decision has not yet been made on whether or not he would be sent down to Albany (AHL) if he cleared.
"It had nothing to do with the other evening," Lamoriello said. "It had to do with making a decision as far as whether we had another different type of forward or not depending upon the injuries. But I didn't like what transpired at the end of the game at that time in that situation."
New Jersey went 6-0-0 versus Pittsburgh in last year's season series, but will face the Penguins tonight with a shortened roster of nine forwards and six defensemen.
"It's not something we'd like to see, but it is what it is today and that's what it will be," Lamoriello said.
