The message has been clear from the start of the Devils' 2017-18 training camp: The preseason is not about wins and losses. General Manager Ray Shero and Coach Hynes used the team's seven exhibition games (where New Jersey finished 5-1-1) to establish the Devils' identity for the upcoming season.
After a strong September start, it looks like the team has achieved its training camp goal. Jersey's Team has proved to be a difficult team to play against by displaying an up-tempo offense that scored more than four goals in three of their games and featured a stingy defense that held the Rangers, Canadians, Senators and Capitals (twice) to just one goal each. New faces in the locker room have contributed immediately, raising the Devils' compete level, and that has paid dividends on the scoreboard.
Check out some of the top plays from the Devils' preseason as we get another day closer to our Oct. 7 home-opener against the Avalanche.
10. Got our MoJo workin'!
Video: NJD@OTT: Johansson capitalizes on turnover
Marcus Johansson was the big Devils trade-acquisition this offseason and has filled in nicely, spending time at center and wing. This snipe is why we got him.
Mirco Mueller made sure you knew he was present when he ripped this slapper past Braden Holtby, scoring the Devils' first goal of the preseason.
8. Just the way we Drew it up
Another new name in the Devils' lineup, Drew Stafford learned quickly that GWGs against the Rangers are more fun, even in the preseason.
7. Hischier serves up a dish for Stafford
Nico Hischier wasn't just scoring goals this preseason. The 18-year-old was using his elite vision as a passer to generate offense for Stafford and the Devils.
6. Into the Palms of our hands
Video: WSH@NJD: Palmieri streaks in and nets five-hole goal
With only seconds remaining in the period, Kyle Palmieri showed off his speed and attacking mentality when sneaking a puck through the five-hole.
5. John Q goes back-to-back
Video: NJD@OTT: Quenneville nets two PPGs within 30 seconds
Scoring PPGs are cool, but having two in 29 seconds is twice as nice. John Quenneville definitely showed off his snipe-shooting ability in P.E.I.
4. Batter up!
Video: NJD@NYR: Zacha bats home a feed out of midair
The perfect amount of sauce on this Stafford pass led to a home run of a shot and goal by Pavel Zacha.
3. Palmieri's handles lead to a Zacha-ttack
Zacha gets the goal but Palmieri's undressing defensemen while on the rush is the real highlight.
2. Bill the Butcher rifles one
Video: NJD@WSH: Butcher launches a nice top-shelf tally
Prowess on the Devils' power play is what Will Butcher can bring to Jersey's lineup. Butcher showed off that skill with this rocket against Ottawa. Don't blink, you might miss it.
1. Hischier steals, dekes, scores in style
Video: WSH@NJD: Hischier nets beautiful backhand goal
What's the best way to make your Devil debut? Score a backhanded beauty like Hischier did in his first preseason game.
Don't miss out Oct. 7 home-opener when the Devils host the Colorado Avalanche at Prudential Center on Oct. 7 at 2PM!
