New Jersey agreed to terms with winger Wayne Simmonds to a one-year deal, worth $5 million on the opening day of free agency. Here are three things to know about the veteran of more than 800 NHL games.

1. CONSISTENT SCORER

Simmonds has racked up a lot of goals in his NHL career. In 841 regular season games, the 2007 second-round pick of the Los Angeles Kings has lit the lamp 243 times.
He has scored more than 30 goals twice. He potted 32 in 2015-16 and 31 the following season. He's scored 20 or more in five of his last six seasons.

2. A LEADER

Simmonds wore the "A" as an alternate captain for the Flyers each of the last five seasons. In 2018-19, he was given the NHL Mark Messier Leadership Award.
The award recognizes an individual as a superior leader within their sport. It also recognizes the recipient as a key contributing member of society.

3. ONE TOUGH CUSTOMER

Simmonds is described as a tough, two-way player. He has a reputation around the league as a player who loves to hit and asserts himself in games with his physical play.
The 6-foot-2, 185-pound winger has logged 1,057 penalty minutes over the course of his career. He had 129 hits in 75 games last season for Philadelphia. That would have been good for third on the Devils roster in 2018-19.
