Despite being in first place in the NHL, on this day in 2007, there were changes made to the New Jersey Devils coaching staff.
On April 2nd, 2007, General Manager Lou Lamoriello was behind the Devils bench as a head coach of the team, replacing Claude Julien and relieving him of his head coaching duties. It was the second time Lamoriello served as the head coach of the Devils.

With a 47-24-8 record, the move came as a surprise to many, but Lamoriello looked beyond the win/losses and saw something was amiss.
"You don't always judge by wins and losses as far as where you are at," Lamoriello said at the time. "The way we put ourselves in this organization, you have to look at the big picture. To say that 102 points today isn't an excellent accomplishment, it's extremely positive. But I have to look at a lot of factors.''
Lamoriello coached the final three games of the regular season posting a 2-0-1 record to close out the year. It was the second consecutive season Lamoriello took over behind the Devils bench.
New Jersey finished the season in 49-24-9 record and a division-leading 107 points and lost in the Eastern Conference Semi Final to the Ottawa Senators, 4-1 in the best of seven matchup.
