#RELENTLESS Fan of the Game: Joe Giovannoli

by Gordy Stillman / New Jersey Devils
A fan since he was a toddler, season ticket member Joe Giovannoli says his most prized possession is his collection of signed jerseys representing every player whose jersey has been retired. Beyond those jerseys, Giovannoli has amassed a collection of nearly 30 hockey sweaters.

NAME: Joe Giovannoli

AGE: 24

HOMETOWN: Waldwick

CAREER: I work in digital marketing.

I HAVE BEEN A DEVILS FAN SINCE: Since I was three years old. My uncle’s company, Zebra Pen, was a sponsor, and I sat on the glass for my first game. I got hooked and started playing hockey in Montvale, as a defenseman. Scott Stevens was by far my favorite player back then.

BEFORE EVERY DEVILS GAME, I MAKE SURE: I always park in the same lot on Market Street, put on a jersey and go to Dinosaur BBQ. Most nights I’m here for the pre-game skate. With the jersey, I like to alternate between red and white jerseys each game.

YOU WOULD BE SURPRISED TO KNOW THAT: I founded a company while I was in college called Out There Marketing. It was a social media marketing company for small to medium-sized businesses. I was able to role it into the company that I worked for when I was out of college. It was a good learning experience.

MY FAVORITE CURRENT PLAYER IS: Kyle Palmieri, but Andy Greene is a close second. Palmieri just has a lot of energy. I could see him eventually being a captain. He kind of brought that California feel, even though he’s a Jersey boy. And, of course, there’s the fact he grew up in the same town that I played hockey in.

IF I COULD ASK HIM ONE THING: Before reaching the NHL, would you have wanted to play for New Jersey over another team, or did you prefer the chance to go somewhere new?

MY FAVORITE MARTY MOMENT IS: The 2003 Stanley Cup Finals. I was 12 years old at the time and remember my parents woke me up and I caught the tail end of the final game. Marty was celebrating, going nuts. At that moment I realized that he was everything that the Devils stood for.

MY FAVORITE PIECE OF DEVILS MEMORABILIA IS: My set of framed, signed jerseys for every player who has had his number retired by the Devils. They’re all on a wall in my house and along the bottom are the patches of each Stanley Cup that they’ve won. I have Marty’s waiting to be hung. The set is my most prized possession, period.

I AM #RELENTLESS BECAUSE: I bleed red, black and white. I love and am passionate about the team.
