Blake Pietila and Graham Black proved a potent one-two punch for the Red team in Tuesday's scrimmage at rookie camp.
Black set up Pietila's tying goal late in regulation and both players scored in the shootout to secure a 4-3 victory at AmeriHealth Pavilion on Day 2 of camp.
Pietila knotted the contest, 3-3, with a quick shot past Anthony Brodeur with 3:56 left in the second period. He went top shelf in the shootout to seal the win.
"We kind of had a 3-on-2 there, I don't know if they were making a line change or what, but I gave it to Black and he made a nice play to give it back to me," Pietila said of his goal. "I just put it on net and it happened to go in."
Cody Wydo and Myles Bell also scored for Red, which rallied from deficits of 2-1 and 3-2 after taking a 1-0 lead. Derek Rodwell, Dmitry Antipin and Michael Ambrosia tallied for White.
The teams played two 20-minute periods: Scott Wedgewood and Brodeur split the game for White; Brandon Hope and Jake Hildebrand shared the duties for Red.
Brodeur stopped Bell and Artur Gavrus in the shootout, then yielded goals to Black and Pietila before denying Ben Johnson. Hildebrand, who played at Michigan State last season, allowed a shootout goal by Reid Boucher before stopping Blake Coleman, Ryan Kujawinski, Derek Rodwell and Michael Ambrosia.
"Overall, I think it was a pretty fast, competitive game," Pietila said. "Everybody was skating hard and looked pretty good."
The Devils' fifth-round pick, 129th overall, in 2011, Pietila won gold with the U.S. at the 2013 world juniors and has been named co-captain at Michigan Tech for the upcoming season.
