Devils team scope

Goalie Cory Schneider will start for the New Jersey Devils at Bell Centre on Thursday. Coach John Hynes said the matchup of Schneider against Montreal Canadiens goalie Carey Price should make it difficult to score. "You have two of the best guys in the game so it's probably going to be tough for both teams to find the back of the net," Hynes said after the morning skate at Bell Centre. "It should be an intense game and it's fun to be a part of when you have two goalies like that going head to head." The Devils have scored eight goals in back-to-back one-goal victories and have 23 during a 3-1-3 stretch that followed a three-game losing streak. "We like our reputation to be a team that's tough to play against and tough to produce offense against," forward Michael Cammalleri said. "We like to rely on our defense and our offense to be something that can be provided when needed. If the numbers say [we are scoring more], then we are, but we don't want to rely on trying to score five goals to win games, that's for sure."

Canadiens team scope

Montreal returns from a 2-2-1 road trip missing two centers. Alex Galchenyuk and David Desharnais each will miss 6-8 weeks because of a knee injury. Galchenyuk, who leads Montreal with 23 points, was injured in a 5-4 shootout win at the Los Angeles Kings on Sunday; Desharnais was injured in a 3-2 overtime loss at the St. Louis Blues on Tuesday. "We believe that we have to keep playing the right way, the same way," coach Michel Therrien said after the morning skate in Brossard, Quebec. "We're a team that plays with pace, and even if we're missing some guys, the guys who are going to be on the ice are going to have to do the job to make sure we maintain that pace." Versatile forward Andrew Shaw is expected to move from the wing to center. "I think we've just got to worry about one game at a time, playing the right way," captain Max Pacioretty said. "We have good depth in this lineup and we like the team that we have, so some guys will definitely get opportunities to get more ice time, more offensive opportunities, so I know guys are excited to try and prove what they've got." Forward Phillip Danault, another option to move from the wing to center, was sent home before the morning skate because of illness, though Therrien said he is likely to play.

Status report

Zacha will miss his second straight game. He had dental work after he was cut on mouth in New Jersey's 5-4 overtime win at the Nashville Predators on Saturday. ... Beaulieu returns after missing six games. He was struck in the throat by a puck during a 4-3 loss to the Ottawa Senators on Nov. 22. "I'm good," Beaulieu said. "It was a pretty scary incident which happened, pretty fluke, but I rehabbed good. The first couple of days were real tough. I couldn't really speak and going up a set of stairs was like running a marathon. I had a lot of blockage in my throat, but I got all healthy and I'm back to normal." Redmond, who broke his foot at the end of training camp, will make his Canadiens debut. Pateryn did not practice and will be a game-time decision. Therrien confirmed Beaulieu and Redmond will play, so Pateryn will likely dress as a seventh defenseman if Danault is unable to play.
