Colin Miller Acquired

The New Jersey Devils announced today that the team acquired defenseman Colin Miller in a trade with the Dallas Stars in exchange for the team's fifth-round pick in the 2025 NHL Draft. The announcement was made by Executive Vice President/General Manager Tom Fitzgerald.

Miller, 30, joins New Jersey after completing his eighth NHL season. The 6'1", 200lbs. blueliner recorded 21 points (6g-15a) and 37 PIM in 79 regular-season games with Dallas in 2022-23. Miller's +23 plus/minus rating and 108 hits both ranked second on Dallas for defensemen last season. The right-handed shot also appeared in his fourth postseason and skated in 10 contests with the Stars in the 2022-23 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

The native of Sault Ste. Marie, ON, has played in 466 career games and totaled 157 points (35-122a) since his NHL debut with the Boston Bruins on Oct. 10, 2015, vs Montreal. Miller skated in two seasons with Boston (2015-16 to 2016-17) and was then selected by the Vegas Golden Knights in the 2017 NHL Expansion Draft. He tallied 10 goals and 31 assists for 41 points with Vegas in 2017-18, which ranked first for all Vegas defensemen and marked career-highs. Miller helped the Golden Knights advance to the 2018 Stanley Cup final, after posting seven points (3g-4a) in 20 postseason contests. His three goals scored in the postseason were all power-play tallies, which were tied for first on Vegas. Miller was teammates with Devils forward Erik Haula with the Golden Knights.

Miller played with the Golden Knights in 2018-19 and was then traded to the Buffalo Sabres on June 29, 2019. He played in 137 games with Buffalo from 2019-20 to 2021-22, tallying 37 points (7g-30a), overall.

Born on Oct. 29, 1992, Los Angeles selected Miller in the fifth round, 151st overall, in the 2012 NHL Draft. Before his NHL experience, the defenseman played two seasons in the American Hockey League (AHL) with the Manchester Monarchs from 2013-14 to 2014-15. He helped Manchester win a Calder Cup in 2014-15 and his 19 goals led (tied) all AHL defensemen. Overall, Miller totaled 81 (28g-53a) career points in the AHL, which also included a stint with Providence in 2015-16 (20 GP).

Miller represented his native country at the International Ice Hockey Federation's (IIHF) 2021 World Championship (WC), was named an assistant captain and won a Gold Medal at the tournament. Miller played in three seasons in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) with the Soo Greyhounds and played in 174 career contests, tallying 105 points (31g-74a) from 2010-11 to 2012-13. He was named team captain for his final season with Soo in 2012-13.

Miller is under contract for one year (2023-24) with a cap hit of $1,850,000; $1,700,000 cash.
