Mark Dennehy

Newark, NJ - The New Jersey Devils today announced that Mark Dennehy has been promoted to Chief Scout, Amateur Scouting from his previous role as Head Coach of the club's American Hockey League affiliate, Binghamton Devils/Utica Comets. Mark will work with hockey operations executives, the amateur scouting department and the entire staff to enhance the club's scouting and development capabilities. The announcement was made by Devils Executive Vice President/General Manager Tom Fitzgerald.
"Mark has a specific skillset in his hockey career that has uniquely prepared him for this newly created role within our organization," said Fitzgerald. "He has experience coaching young players on the international level, recruited players to play in a collegiate program that he built, and worked with young players who have achieved their NHL dreams. His ability to soak up information, ask questions, and constantly challenge the group to be better, represent what we envision this role to be. We are confident in his ability to work to continue bringing our scouting and evaluation process to the next level. Mark has already immersed himself in this new career challenge over the past few months and is extremely excited to help draft future Devils."
Nearly three years ago to the day, Dennehy was named the Head Coach of the Binghamton Devils, on August 1, 2018. In his three seasons, the club's best year was in 2019-20 when he piloted the team to a 34-24-4 mark in 62 games, fourth place in the North Division, and sitting in a playoff spot at the time of the pause, at which point they were the hottest team in the AHL while riding a seven-game win streak and had a 23-9 record since December 14. That team graduated multiple prospects to regular NHL roles last season, including Yegor Sharangovich, Janne Kuokkanen, Michael McLeod, Nathan Bastian, Jesper Boqvist, and Mikhail Maltsev. His work with the B-Devils last year also led to in-season NHL appearances from Nolan Foote, Kevin Bahl, Tyce Thompson, and Marian Studenic.

Prior to being named Head Coach in Binghamton, Dennehy, 53, coached for 13 seasons at Merrimack College (Hockey East), posted 161 wins, and helped turn the program around. In 2010-11, he led the team to the most successful season in school history with a record 25 wins, as the Warriors advanced to the Hockey East Final and NCAA Regionals. For his efforts, Dennehy won the Bob Kullen Coach of the Year Award as the conference's top coach.
Before his time at Merrimack, he served as assistant coach with UMass.-Amherst (HE, 1995-96 & 2000-2005), Princeton University (ECAC, 1997-99) and as Head Coach at Fairfield (MAAC, 1996-97).
Internationally, Dennehy served as assistant coach for the 2019 Team USA Under-18 Men's Select Team at the 2019 Hlinka Gretzky Cup. He served as head coach of Team USA's Under-17 Men's Select Team that placed third in the 2018 Under-17 Five Nations Tournament and was assistant coach for the 2017 Under-17 Five Nations Tournament team that secured gold.
As a right-shooting defenseman, he played four seasons at Boston College, 1987-1991, scoring eight goals and 46 assists for 54 points and 66 penalty minutes in 133 games. He played one professional season with Ayr of the British Hockey League.
Born October 18, 1967 in Dorchester, MA, Mark and his wife, Heather, have three daughters: Kelsey (17), Kielan (16) and Caroline (13).
