Kinkaid gets second straight start against Capitals

12/31 Devils vs. Capitals: 3 Things to Know

by Julie Robenhymer /

The Devils look to end 2016 with back-to-back wins against Washington as they host the Capitals this afternoon at Prudential Center in the backend of a home-and-home series. Here's what you need to know:

1) Head coach John Hynes announced today that Keith Kinkaid will make his second consecutive start against the Capitals. Kinkaid earned the 2-1 shootout victory against the Capitals on Thursday night by making 43 saves. More than just rewarding a goalie for a performance labeled as brilliant by his teammates, Hynes also had to consider the two sets of back-to-back games they'll play next week and how he would manage his goalies' playing time.

2) Taylor Hall did not practice with the team yesterday and will not play today. He's still listed as day-to-day and is expected to return to the lineup soon.

3) After allowing more shots and more shorthanded opportunities in Thursday's game than they'd like to, the Devils worked on tightening up defensively in practice yesterday, as well as a more fluid transition game to keep the puck out of enemy hands in the neutral zone.

You can watch today's game on MSG+ or listen on WFAN or The One Jersey Network. Puck drops at 1 p.m.

Programming Alert: Immediately following today's game (3:30 p.m.), Joey Anderson and Team USA will square off with Blake Speers, Michael McLeod and Team Canada in their preliminary round finale with first place in Group B on the line. Watch it live on NHL Network!
