The Devils lost 1-0 to the Washington Capitals at Verizon Center Thursday night. Here's what we learned:
1) Kevin Rooney played 9:48 in his NHL debut with one blocked shot, a hit and was 60% effective in the faceoff circle.

2) The Devils only had 15 shots on net, but it wasn't indicative of time spent in the offensive zone. They had 24 shots that were blocked and 11 that missed the target for a total of 50 fired in Braden Holtby's direction. On the defensive side of things, the Devils blocked 19 shots, including five by Ben Lovejoy, and limited one of the most offensive teams in the league to 24 shots on goal.
3) Special teams was the difference tonight as Washington scored the game's only goal on the power play, but also put up nine of their 24 shots with the man advantage.
The Devils will practice on Friday afternoon at Boston University, the alma mater of head coach John Hynes, before playing the Bruins on Saturday night at TDGarden.
