Devils Captain Nico Hischier is having an impactful season for his team. Over the last five games, Hischier has five goals and is riding a four-game goals streak. Due to this strong performance, Hischier was named the NHL's Third Star for the week of Feb. 14.
"This year, power play, penalty killing, (he's) that guy that we're counting on for all the faceoffs," Ruff said on Hischier. "He's gotten himself on a nice little roll scoring goals too so he's really doing it all for us, and that's really what you expect out of your leaders."
"He's had a good streak here of playing good games and real solid hockey for us. When Hischier's healthy and at his best, he's one of the most dominant two-way players in game, and he doesn't get recognized enough for that," Severson said following the announcement. "He's our captain, he's a great leader, he's come a long way as well, and he deserves the recognition he gets."

Hischier takes a lot of pride in his two-way game and it's something he's focused on over the years.
"I've been working on that my whole career. I think already coming into the league that was something I tried to work on a lot. I want to be that center that it doesn't matter if you're up or down, the coach can put you out there and help the team in any areas.
"I take a lot of pride in my defensive game and I'm working every day on it … I just want to bring consistent game in the d-zone every night for our team."
With 13 goals and 17 assists for 30 points, the center is second in goals and points for New Jersey. Hischier is the second Devils player to receive NHL recognition this season, joining Jack Hughes with league honors.
