newjerseydevils.com – Matt Halischuk had a shorthanded goal for the Kitchener Rangers (OHL), who fell, 2-1, to the Spokane Chiefs (WHL) at the 2008 Mastercard Memorial Cup in Kitchener on Sunday.
It was the first loss for Kitchener (1-1) in the annual tournament, which pits the champions of the OHL, WHL and QMJHL against the team from the host city. The Belleville Bulls (OHL) and Gatineau Olympiques (QMJHL) round out this year's competitors.
Halischuk, selected with New Jersey's fourth choice, 117th overall in the 2007 Entry Draft, has struck for three goals in Kitchener's first two games of the tournament. The Toronto product followed up a 59-point regular season (13g-46a) in 2007-08 with 16 goals and 16 assists in 20 playoff contests.
Kitchener, which defeated Belleville for the OHL title, will be back in action Wednesday versus the Bulls. The tournament semifinal is slated for Friday, with the title contest set for Sunday.
