The Devils' list of injured players grew by one more on Friday, when it was announced that defenseman Andy Greene
is expected to miss the next four to six weeks with a broken hand.
Greene, who leads New Jersey defensemen with six points (1g-5a), sustained the injury in Wednesday's 6-5 shootout loss to Toronto, but did not leave the game. He has five points in the last four games, including a three-assist night against the Leafs.
The second-year blueliner was set to have surgery Friday.
For the Devils, Brian Rolston (ankle) and Bobby Holik (pinky finger) remain out of action. Jamie Langenbrunner missed last Saturday's game at Philadelphia with a lower body injury and returned Wednesday to pick up a goal against Toronto. He did not take part in Friday's practice at AmeriHealth Pavilion because of personal reasons.
"[The injuries] have certainly piled up here in the last two weeks," Head coach Brent Sutter said Friday. "You can't sit around and dwell on it or worry about it. The guys you have need to be playing at their best. It's too bad with Greenie because he was playing very well."
The Devils (5-2-2) are back in action Saturday night when they host Atlanta at 7 p.m. New Jersey is winless in three straight, but has gained a point in back-to-back games.
Friday's practice saw Dainius Zubrus
skate with Patrik Elias
and Brian Gionta, Travis Zajac
with Zach Parise
and Nicklas Bergfors; John Madden with Jay Pandolfo and David Clarkson
; and Mike Rupp with Petr Vrana
and Matt Halischuk.
Defenseman Sheldon Brookbank, who filled in at right wing in his one appearance this season, skated with Mike Mottau in practice. Bryce Salvador
was paired with Paul Martin; Colin White with Johnny Oduya.
