It's official, Travis Green will join the Devils coaching staff as an Associate Coach. As an ex-NHL player and coach he brings 26 years of experience in professional hockey to his new role.

In this edition of Three Things presented by GEICO we take a look at Green's career and a reunion with a former teammate.

1. Playing Career

Green played 17 years of professional hockey starting in the AHL with the Capital District Islanders and ending in Switzerland with EV Zug. 14 of his 17 professional seasons were in the NHL playing for the New York Islanders, Anaheim Ducks, Arizona Coyotes, Toronto Maple Leafs, and Boston Bruins. He played a total of 970 NHL games where he scored 193 goals and 262 assists for 455 points.

The newest Devils coach also represented his home country, Canada, three times throughout his career, starting with the 1996 Men's World Championship where Canada took home a Silver Medal. One year later, Green would come back with more hardware, this time a gold medal from the 1997 Men's World Championship. In his third straight year playing for Canada at Worlds, Green and his home country finished sixth in the tournament.

2. Coaching Career

Following his playing days Green became a coach, starting in the Western Hockey League with the Portland Winterhawks. After two and a half years as an Assistant, he became the Interim Head Coach and General Manager for half a season. During that time he led the Winterhawks to a 37-8-2 record and a WHL Championship. Portland also made it to the CHL Memorial Cup Finals under Green.

Next up in his coaching career was four years as the Head Coach of the Utica Comets, an affiliate of the Vancouver Canucks at the time. During the 2014-15 season, Green led the Comets to the Calder Cup finals where they lost in five games to the Manchester Monarchs.

Starting in the 2017-18 season, Green moved up to the NHL where he was the Head Coach of the Vancouver Canucks for four and a half years before he was let go during the 2021-22 season. During his time with the Canucks, Green coached Quinn Hughes, the brother of Jack and Luke, so he's on track to coach all three.

Last year, Green served as a Senior Advisor for the Swiss National Team during the Karjala Cup and as the head coach of Canada's Spengler Cup team. Green won a gold medal as the bench boss of the Spengler Cup team, adding more hardware to his collection from international tournaments with Hockey Canada.

3. Reunited with His Former Teammate

His new job as Associate Coach of the Devils reunites Green with a former teammate. Devils General Manager Tom Fitzgerald and Green played together with three different franchises: the New York Islanders from 1990-93, the Toronto Maple Leafs during the 2002-03 season, and the Boston Bruins over the 2003-04 campaign.

In their last season together as teammates, an incredible photo was captured of Green celebrating his shorthanded goal with Fitzgerald.

Green, Fitzgerald Playing Days

Pretty epic. As the Devils look to continue the success they had in the 2022-23 season, Green's experience and expertise will help New Jersey in its quest for another Stanley Cup.
