Great Games #9: Gionta stuns Wings

by Staff Writer / New Jersey Devils looks back at 10 of the top Devils games from last season.

#9 - March 4, 2014 Devils 4, Red Wings 3

Stephen Gionta made victory possible at the very last minute.

Gionta’s redirection of a Mark Fayne shot from the right point beat goalie Jimmy Howard with 36.6 seconds remaining in regulation to give the Devils a 4-3 win at Prudential Center back on March 4.

"We've been playing better since we came out of the Olympic break," Devils forward Patrik Elias said. "We're creating more chances, and the puck is going in. We have another big game on Friday and we'll need to keep playing the same way."

Jaromir Jagr's assist on Travis Zajac's goal moved him into ninth place on the NHL's all-time list. It was the 1,041st of his career, one more than Marcel Dionne.

"It was grind, a trap game for us against a rested team,” said head coach Peter DeBoer. "We had trouble finding the energy and in the third dug deep and outshot them, which was great considering how the game began."
