Great Games #7: Zid zaps Cats in OT

by Staff Writer / New Jersey Devils looks back at 10 of the top Devils games from last season.

#7 - Jan. 11, 2014 Devils 2, Panthers 1 F/OT

It was a win by the slimmest of margins, maybe even a whisker.

Hosting the Panthers last Jan. 11, the Devils were looking to claim five of a possible six points on a three-game homestand at Prudential Center. Tied 1-1 late in overtime, Travis Zajac won an offensive zone draw to Jaromir Jagr, who fed Marek Zidlicky for a one-timer that beat Tim Thomas with 2.1 seconds to go in the extra session.

The stunning buzzer beater secured a 2-1 victory, closing out a 2-0-1 run at The Rock.

"I can tell you we draw up a thousand faceoff plays over the course of a season and they very rarely work," Peter DeBoer said. "You either lose a draw or you don't get a bounce. The credit was to the execution. Zajac, Jagr and Zid and [Steve] Bernier did a great job."

Jagr, whose assist moved him past Mario Lemieux on the all-time points list, told Zidlicky exactly where he needed to be.

"I wanted him to be a little bit closer," Jagr said. "If he's far away, the forward's coming so it's going to take a longer time to get it. He's got a good one-timer, so I just want to make sure he's close enough."

Michael Ryder opened the scoring with his 16th of the year before Cory Schneider nailed down the W with 29 saves.

"What an ending," Schneider said. "I'm not sure anybody thought that we were going to score off that faceoff. ... We were I think very deserving of a bounce like that and I think it's a big win for us, so we'll take it.”
