The Devils have placed Stephen Gionta (ankle) on injured reserve, retroactive to Nov. 23, general manager Lou Lamoriello announced Wednesday.
"We have to make sure that that ankle is a hundred percent so there's no reoccurrences later on," Lamoriello said.
Seth Helgeson was recalled from Albany (AHL) under emergency conditions and hopes to make his NHL debut when the Devils host Carolina at 7 p.m. The defenseman has two assists this season in 19 games with the Devils' top affiliate.
Anton Volchenkov and Eric Gelinas both took part in Wednesday's morning skate and are questionable.
"It'll be a coach's decision and also a trainer's decision once morning skate is over on whether we terminate the emergency (recall) and send him back," Lamoriello said. "If one of the two is OK, they'll certainly play.
Adam Larsson (lower body) did not skate Wednesday.
Lamoriello also updated that Bryce Salvador and Ryane Clowe have resumed skating on their own, though no timetable has been set for their return. Salvador (non-displaced stress fracture in foot) has missed 15 games. Clowe (head) has been on the shelf for 18 games.
"When they're ready to go into a full practice, they will," said Lamoriello.
