"Everyone's really excited for him," Devils interim head coach Alain Nasreddine said of Schneider. "I really liked the way we played as a team tonight from playing in front of Cory and guys sticking up for one another."
During a scramble in front of the net, Joey Anderson pounced on a loose puck and put it past Red Wings goaltender Jonathan Bernier to give the Devils an early lead. Dakota Mermis got an assist for his first point as a Devil only 1:17 into the game.
"I thought we were ready to play. First two minutes we banged one home. It was good to get one early," said Schneider. "My teammates worked hard for me tonight. These games matter. They matter to me, the group in here and to our fans. I take pride in it and the guys do as well."
Five minutes into the game, Detroit took a penalty for too many men on the ice, giving the Devils the game's first power play. They had two shots on the man advantage but could not convert.
Shots on goal were 11-4 Devils past the midway point of the opening period.
Cory Schneider made a great stop, kicking out his right pad to stop Anthony Mantha on a chance along the ice at close range with three minutes to go in the first.
"There were moments in the first, a couple saves, and in the second as well. Keeping it 2-0," Schneider stated.
Dakota Mermis added that he was happy to see Schneider get the victory.
"So great. Schneids is such a great guy," said Mermis. He was a big part in what was going on in Binghamton. Invested in himself to do better."
After one, shots on goal were 17-9 for New Jersey.
Frans Nielsen was called for holding to put the Devils on their second power play of the night almost five minutes into the middle frame.
With 22 seconds left in the man advantage, Jesper Bratt pounced on a rebound in front of the net and whacked it past Bernier glove side to double the Devils lead.
Devils went back to the power play when Dylan Larkin was sent off for two minutes with 13:07 to go in the second.
With two seconds left in that power play, Jack Hughes threaded the needle to Kyle Palmieri in front for the easy tap-in and his 23rd goal of the season.
New Jersey took its first penalty of the game as Miles Wood was called for cross-checking. Detroit's best chance came on the stick of Dylan Larkin but Schneider made a nice stop at close range.
After two, shots on goal were 25-18 for the Devils.
Jack Hughes tripped up Robby Fabbri, giving the Wings a power play midway through the third period.
On the ensuing power play, the Red Wings scored 34 seconds in to make it 3-1. Valtteri Filppula pounced on a loose puck and put it into the open cage to get the Wings on the board.
Dylan Larkin was called for hooking to send the Devils to the power play with 8:09 to go. Nikita Gusev then rifled a shot from the slot blocker side past Bernier with 10 seconds to go in that man advantage to regain New Jersey's three-goal lead with their third power play goal of the night.
Tempers flared up at the end of the game after Tyler Bertuzzi took a high hit at Jack Hughes followed by John Hayden knocking down the Detroit winger with a cross-check. Hayden received a five-minute major and a game misconduct as a result of his actions.
"For some reason they weren't happy with the hit from Jack (on Fabbri earlier in the game). You don't want to leave Jack on the bench. Having John there brings some comfort," said Nasreddine.
"It's part of hockey, part of being a team. I liked the response."
Final shot count in the game was 31-28 for the Devils.
