Day 2 of the 2012 NHL Draft opened with sad news when it was announced that Devils scout Fernie Flaman passed away Friday night. The Hockey Hall of Famer was 85.
Flaman appeared in 910 NHL games with Boston and Toronto, collecting 34 goals and 174 assists in a career that spanned 1944-45 to 1960-61. He hoisted the Stanley Cup while a member of the Maple Leafs in 1950-51.
Flaman also enjoyed a successful coaching career in the college ranks, guiding Northeastern for 19 seasons. He led the Huskies to four Beanpot Tournament victories and the Hockey East title in 1988.
He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1990.
Flaman was born Jan. 25, 1927, in Dysart, Saskatchewan.
