For a moment, Jaromir Jagr thought he held the NHL record for game-winning goals.
On Tuesday, he notched the 119th winner of his career to move ahead of Phil Esposito for what was believed to be the most by any player in NHL history. However, the Elias Sports Bureau, which compiles player stats before 1967, announced after the game that the mark actually belongs to Gordie Howe (121).
"I didn't know I was [the record holder], so I didn't know I wasn't," Jagr said.
But the night wasn't a total loss. Jagr still has the most game-winners of any player since 1967-68.
"At least I got a good picture [with the game puck]," he said.
