Devils select Blake Pietila in fifth round

ST. PAUL -- With their fifth-round pick, 129th overall, on Saturday, the Devils selected left wing Blake Pietila of the U.S. Under-18 Team.

Pietila was the third straight player the Devils drafted out of the USHL, joining Blake Coleman (Indiana) and his U-18 teammate Reid Boucher. Coleman and Boucher were selected in the third and fourth rounds, respectively.

At 5-11, 189 lbs., Pietila was ranked 105th among North American skaters by Central Scouting. The native of Milford, Mich., collected 13 goals and nine assists for 22 points in 52 games last season. He also racked up 51 penalty minutes while seeing time in a checking role.

"He's a little bit more of a two-way than a pure goal scorer, but he also has offensive capabilities," said Devils' Director of Scouting David Conte.

Pietila will attend Michigan Tech (WCHA) in the fall.
