PRE-GAME STORY

NEWARK, N.J. -
In the midst of a busy end-of-season schedule, the Devils are back on home ice tonight after a weekend trip in Florida. Tonight, the Minnesota Wild the Devils plan to ice the same lineup that posted the victory in Tampa Bay, meaning another opportunity for Nolan Foote to make an impression on a line with Michael McLeod and Yegor Sharangovich.
Foote scored his first goal of the season in Tampa, but there was more to his game that Lindy Ruff liked.
"I think the thing that was evident was his strength around the puck was better, his skating was better, and that's the type of growth you hope for," Ruff shared, "I think the guys down in Utica have done a good job with him and they have him in a good place right now."
The line worked for Ruff and his staff.
"I liked the fact that they were on the puck, they got it deep," the head coach added, "they had good O-Zone time, they were in on a couple of opportunities, obviously Foote scored the goal. I thought McLeod did a great job of getting to the net. They did everything right. They played well defensively, I thought it was a real good night for that line."

The Ins and Outs

Foote will continue to get an opportunity tonight, not only because of his play in the last game but because the team's depth is currently being tested. Curtis Lazar will be out "for some time" Ruff noted, Lazar having left the game against the Panthers in the third period.
And although it was encouraging to see Miles Wood on the ice with his teammates today, a first since leaving the game against the Lightning on March 14, is still not ready to return. Although not skating with the entire team yet, Nathan Bastian was on the ice with skills coach Ryan Murphy on the practice ice while the rest of the team took to the game rink for the morning skate. His scheduled return remains unknown at this time.
Brendan Smith was also missing from the morning session, Lindy Ruff indicated that he was not present for personal reasons.

A Connected Pair

On Sunday, as the team continued to tinker with their lines, Erik Haula was reunited on a line with Jack Hughes. The two players spent most of the early part of the season as a duo and were put back together again last game.
Against the Lightning, Haula played a forward-high 20:04.
"I don't even consider us, one a center really, we read and react," Haula said, "When I play with him I try to do some of the stuff that he necessarily doesn't want to do or isn't yet as comfortable with, or isn't his strength yet. So I try to bring that and take some responsibility on the defensive side of the puck. But also knowing his game a bit and learning how to play with him, be in position of being able to help him out."
"They have a good connection," Ruff added of the line makeup, "I think what happens too is, to have the puck a little bit more too, Erik's faceoff percentage is better. It's just a chemistry there those two guys kind of have. And with (Dawson) Mercer, a guy that kind of hangs on to the puck and gets around the front of the net, I think scoring chances finally went way up for Jack, they were up for Haula, Merc was in on a couple of great chances."

PREVIEW

DEVILS (45-18-7) vs. WILD (40-22-8)
TV: 7:00 p.m. ET; Televised on MSGSN
RADIO: 7:00 p.m. ET; Listen on Devils Hockey Network
Head-to-Head:
This is the second and final meeting between the Devils and Wild with Minnesota picking up a 3-2 shootout win at home. Tomas Tatar had both Devils goals, as he scored twice in under-five minutes during the second period. Ondrej Palat, Dougie Hamilton, Damon Severson, and Jesper Boqvist picked up assists. Vitek Vanecek saved 22 of the 24 shots he faced in the loss.
Devils Team Scope:
After dropping three-straight games, the Devils rebounded with a strong 5-2 victory over the Lightning in Tampa. The win was on the second half of a back-to-back after the Devils lost in Sunrise 4-2 on Saturday night. Jesper Bratt recorded his first-career hat trick against Tampa while Nico Hischier and Nolan Foote each recorded a goal. Nine different players were on the score sheet.
Jack Hughes paces the Devils with 37 goals and 81 points while Dougie Hamilton is second with 48 assists. In Sunday's game, Jesper Bratt and Nico Hischier each hit 30 goals, a career-high for both players. Bratt is 11 points back from setting a new career-high with points and 15 assists back from setting a new personal record in that scoring category. Hischier is four assists away from a new career-high for helpers and has already set new career highs with goals and points.
Vitek Vanecek has a 29-8-0 record with a 2.51 goals against average and a .909 save percentage. Vanecek is one win away from joining Martin Brodeur as the only other goaltender in franchise history to record 30 wins in a regular season. Akira Schmid is currently backing up Vanecek and he has a 8-5-2 record with a 2.05 goals against average and a .924 save percentage.
Wild Team Scope:
The Wild are 7-2-1 in their last 10 games and most recently beat the Capitals 5-3 on Sunday. Minnesota had nine players on the scoresheet and Matt Boldy had a hat trick in the win. Currently the Wild are second in the Central Division with 88 points, two ahead of the third-place team, the Colorado Avalanche. Minnesota is 11 points ahead of Calgary who are the first team out in the wild card race.
Kirill Kaprizov's 39 goals and 74 points lead the Wild while Mats Zuccarello's 41 assists pace the team. However, the team is without their top scorer due to a lower-body injury. Minnesota has four players with 20 goals or more: Kaprizov, Joel Eriksson Ek (23), Zuccarello (22), and Boldy (22). All four players also have over 50 points this season. Marc-Andre Fleury won his seventh straight start for the Wild on Sunday. Fleury has a 23-13-3 record with a 2.83 goals against average and a .908 save percentage. Filip Gustavsson has a 17-9-5 record with a 2.08 goals against average and a .929 save percentage.
When it comes to team stats, the Wild only hold the advantage over the Devils with their power play which is 12th in the NHL, scoring on 22.3% of their opportunities. Minnesota is fourth in goals against per game played, averaging 2.67 a game while the Devils are right ahead of them in third place with a 2.67 GA/GP.
By the Numbers:
Matt Boldy, who had a hat trick in the Minnesota's most recent game, is the second player in Wild history to score at least 20 goals in a seaosn before the age of 22, and the third player in team history to get at least 50 points in a season before the age of 22.
The comeback kids continue their winning ways as the 2022-23 Devils have 23 comeback victories this season, tying a franchise record. New Jersey leads the NHL in this category as they're one win ahead of the Toronto Maple Leafs.
