Newark, NJ — The National Hockey League’s New Jersey Devils will open their 33rd season in the Garden State on Friday, October 9, as they host the Winnipeg Jets at Prudential Center at 7:00 PM. Led by new General Manager Ray Shero, Head Coach John Hynes, Assistant Coaches Geoff Ward and Alain Nasreddine, and Goaltending Coach Chris Terreri, the club will open the road portion of their schedule the following evening at Washington at 7:00 PM.
The Devils’ home schedule includes 21 weekend dates: ten Friday games, six Saturday matches and five Sunday contests. Highlighting the weekend slate are six early starts: Sat., Oct. 31 vs. NY Islanders (1:00 PM); Sun., Nov. 8 vs. Vancouver (5:00 PM); Sat., Feb. 6 vs. Washington (1:00 PM); Sun., Feb. 14 vs. Los Angeles (12:30 PM); Sun., Mar. 6 vs. Pittsburgh (5:00 PM); and Sun., Mar. 20 vs. Columbus (5:00 PM). All other home games will get underway at 7:00 PM.
The club will play its first of 15 home Metropolitan Division matches on Tue., Oct. 27 vs. Columbus. There are four pairs of home-and-home sets, all vs. Eastern Conference opponents: Oct. 31 vs. NY Islanders/Nov. 3 at NY Islanders; Nov.27 vs. Montreal/Nov. 28 at Montreal; Dec. 26 at Carolina/Dec. 29 vs. Carolina; and Mar. 19 at Columbus/Mar. 20 vs. Columbus. New Jersey will play three season-high three-game homestands: Fri., Nov. 6 through Tue., Nov. 10; Sun., Feb. 14 through Fri., Feb. 19; and Tue., Apr. 5 through the season-closer, Sat., Apr. 9. The defending Stanley Cup Champion Chicago Blackhawks will make their lone Prudential Center appearance on Fri., Nov. 6.
New Jersey’s road schedule features a season-high four-game Western Conference swing from Sun., Jan. 10 through Sat., Jan. 16 and includes stops in Minnesota, St. Louis, Colorado, and Arizona. The team also has two three-game Pacific Division trips: Tue., Nov. 17-Sun., Nov. 22 and Thu., Mar. 10-Mon., Mar. 14; as well as a three-game Eastern Conference trip Sun., Dec. 20-Sat., Dec 26. The team will close out the road portion of its schedule with a pair of games in the Sunshine State: Thu., Mar. 31 at Florida and Sat., Apr. 2 at Tampa Bay.
Under the National Hockey League’s scheduling matrix, the Devils are playing 30 games vs. Metropolitan Division opposition: five games vs. Carolina (2 home/3 road) and Columbus (3 home/2 road); and four each vs. NY Islanders, NY Rangers, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and Washington. The squad is scheduled to play 24 matches vs. Atlantic Division teams (three games each). New Jersey will also face each of the 14 Western Conference clubs twice (28 games).
With youth and high school hockey participation at an all-time high in the Garden State, the Devils/Prudential Center are set to host an increasing number of New Jersey-born and trained NHLers this season, including Toronto’s James van Riemsdyk, Calgary’s Johnny Gaudreau, Washington’s John Carlson, Anaheim’s Kyle Palmieri, Ottawa’s Bobby Ryan and St. Louis’ Kevin Shattenkirk.
