PRE-GAME STORY

NEWARK, NJ - Devils defenseman Damon Severson took part in the team's morning skate and confirmed that he will return to the lineup against the Kraken.
"It's nice to come back, first one of the year," he said following the skate. "I'm excited."
The team held an optional morning skate with forward Tomas Tatar and defenseman P.K. Subban opting out. The only other absentees were forward Miles Wood (undisclosed) and goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood (heel).
Head coach Lindy Ruff said Blackwood isn't likely to play during New Jersey's season-opening five-game homestand.
"Today was a good day for (Blackwood). I talked to him personally about how he's feeling," Ruff said. "With the amount of time that he's been away from the ice, he's going to need some practice time. He's doing a lot of conditioning off the ice. It won't be a conditioning issue, it'll just be getting back into competitive hockey and seeing reps on the ice."
Blueliner Ty Smith took part in the morning skate and Ruff expects him to return within the next few days and "possibly by the weekend."
Hello Old Friend
The Devils will be facing a former teammate tonight as Nathan Bastian makes his return to the Prudential Center. Bastian, the team's second-round pick (41st overall) in 2016, was chosen by Seattle in the summer's Expansion Draft after completing his first full season in the NHL with the Devils in 2020-21.
Current Devil Mike McLeod and Bastian are longtime friends, and former linemates. The duo were two-thirds of last season's BMW Line (Bastian, McLeod and Wood) and bonded during their many seasons together with two at Binghamton of the American Hockey League from 2018-20 and three years in the Ontario Hockey League with Mississauga.
"It'll be a little weird at first. I've been playing with him for so long and then seeing him on the other side. It'll be a little different," McLeod said. "But it's hockey a game. We'll get used to it."
The two junior players also enjoyed being drafted back-to-back in the same year as McLeod was the Devils' first-round pick (12th overall) in 2016. Both became full-time NHLers last season together. But don't think that'll stop them from playing each other tough on the ice.
"We're both going to play hard and whatever happens, happens," McLeod said.
Bastian appeared in 48 games with New Jersey in his career, posting six goals and 13 points.
First Timers
The Devils will be facing the Seattle Kraken for the first time, ever. And with that comes some preparation challenges for the coaching staff having only four games to scout. The team will rely on some familiarity they have with the club's makeup of players and staff.
"You understand all these different players, eight or nine have come from the East. You're familiar with (them). You know what they bring," Ruff said. "Just knowledge of other coaches. I worked with (Kraken head coach) Dave Hakstol at the Worlds (tournament) a couple years ago. I understand how he likes his team to play, and I understand how he coached Philadelphia."
While the Kraken are trying to teach an entire set of newcomers the system, the same can be said of many teams throughout league. Even newcomers to the Devils are trying to make such an adjustment.
"At the start of the year, every team is figuring out their identities," said Ryan Graves, who is a new member of the Devils this season. "Guys are in and out of the lineup. I think it becomes more about us than them. If we play our game, we feel confident that we can beat teams night in and night out. I'm sure they're going to work hard. They're a team of guys known as hard workers."
Home Flair
The Devils are in the midst of a season-opening five-game homestand with Seattle being the second opponent on the slate. After an electric opening night contest, which included a 4-3 overtime victory, the Devils are looking to establish a home-ice advantage early into the season.
"It was nice to finally play out there in front of the fans and see what the atmosphere was like," Graves said. "A homestand to start the year is always a good thing. You can settle in. It's always more enjoyable to play at home. It's good for us. At the same time, it's important to win your home games and take advantage of being home. We're looking to do that. We got one so far, but there are a few more to come that we really need to take advantage of."
Goalie?
The Devils know that Jonathan Bernier will get the start in net for them. But whom he'll be staring down at the other end is a question.
The team was expecting to see Kraken backup goaltender Chris Driedger for tonight's game since starter Philipp Grubauer played in Monday night's contest in Philadelphia. But after Grubauer was pulled after allowing five goals on 20 shots, tonight's starter is no longer a given.
