INSIDE THE DEVILS

The Devils practiced in Newark on Monday after a day off. Head coach Lindy Ruff changes his lines and defensive pairings.

PRE-GAME STORY

NEWARK, NJ -The Devils held an optional morning skate Tuesday prior to hosting the Calgary Flames in the fifth and final game of a season-opening homestand.
Goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood (heel) was on the ice with his teammates for the first time in over two weeks. Goalie Jonathan Bernier (lower-body) and forwards Jack Hughes (dislocated left shoulder) and Miles Wood (undisclosed) were injury absences.
"No real update (on Hughes)," head coach Lindy Ruff said. "Every day he's feeling better, but we have no real update."
"He's just taking some time," Ruff added on Wood.
New Pair
The Devils showed off some new line combinations and defensive pairings at Monday's practice. Among the most intriguing is the duo of Ty Smith and Dougie Hamilton, both known to have some offensive flair from the backend.
"I just want them to play well at both ends of the rink," Ruff said. "We like our defense to get involved. If you look at their similarities, yeah they're good offensively. They can help us offensively, too. At the same time, we need them to play well defensively."
Typically, a defense pairing features one more offensive-minded player matched with a more defensively grounded player. But with two players both willing to jump into the play and push the pace, they'll need to read off each on which player goes and which drops back.
"You just play hockey. We're smart enough to figure that out, when to go," Hamilton said. "Hopefully I can see when he's going, and he can see when I'm going. It's not like we're both up in the play every time or both want to be every time, so I think we both have good reads on when we can do that kind of stuff."
While both have a tendency to create in the offensive zone, both do it in different ways. But in the defensive zone, they couldn't be more different in style and stature (Smith, 5-foot-1; Hamilton, 6-foot-5).
"We'll move the puck well to each other," Smith said. "I'll try to defend with my legs. He's a bigger body, so that helps. I think it should go well. We'll see how it goes. He likes to create offense more by shooting the puck and I like to do it with passing the puck. Two different ways to do it so hopefully that compliments each other and works well."
For Smith, it's an opportunity to play with one of the best blueliners in the NHL at his side.
"Dougie is elite. It is exciting," Smith said. "But it's just another game. I think it should be good. I think we're excited to play together and see how it goes."
Old Flame
For Hamilton, it won't be just a normal game. He'll be playing against a former team. Hamilton suited up for the Flames from 2015-18. And even though most of the players he played with from those teams are gone, it still has some meaning.
"It's been a while now. It's crazy to look at the roster and see how different it is," Hamilton said. "It's nice to play against some old friends and compete against them and see if you can shut them down.
"It was a lot of fun to play with those guys. I haven't seen them or played against them in a while with everything that has happened. It should be fun to go against them today."
Playing with Fire
One of Hamilton's former teammates is Calgary forward Johnny Gaudreau, who has seven assists in five games this season.
"Speed. The way he handles the puck. The way he sees the ice. He's a good player," Ruff said of Gaudreau. "He knows how to play the game. He knows how to create open ice. He knows how to get away from people. I think his quickness and east-west mobility makes it hard on a big man to track him down."
The Flames are off to a hot, forgive the pun, start to the season with a 3-1-1 mark, which includes a current three-game winning streak.
"They're a team in the offensive zone that has a lot of tenacity going to the net," Ruff said. "They get pucks there quickly. We have to watch the tips and second opportunities. A guy like Gaudreau gets opportunities off the rush, he's really dangerous. We have to make sure we're not giving up the odd-rush opportunities."
The Devils have struggled lately of winning puck battles and playing with intensity. That'll have to change tonight if they want success.
"They play hard. They're a hard-working team. They've been playing well on the road," Smith said. "For us, we'll have to be ready to compete tonight. They're a team that competes. We have to match that and maybe bring a little bit more."

PREVIEW

TV:7:00 PM ET; Televised on MSG+
Head-to-Head
This will be the first matchup between the New Jersey Devils and Calgary Flames since Nov. 8, 2019, and the first meeting in New Jersey since Feb. 28, 2019. The Flames are playing in game four of a five-game road trip. They have a 3-0-0 record on the current trip and are coming off of a 5-1 win last night against the New York Rangers.
Devils team scope:
New Jersey will close out a five-game homestand to start the 2021-22 regular season and look to build on their 3-1-0 record. New Jersey could have several new-look lines and pairing against the Flames after Lindy Ruff made adjustments to his roster during Monday's practice.
Ruff emphasized the desire to create a balanced lineup where his team has a better net-front presence and an ability to create higher-danger chances. Notably, the line of Pavel Zacha, Nico Hischier, and Jesper Bratt has been split up, with Hischier centering Yegor Sharangovich and Janne Kuokkanen, while Zacha is playing on Dawson Mercer's left wing with Tomas Tatar and Bratt lines up with Michael McLeod and Andreas Johnsson.
Flames team scope:
Calgary is on the second half of a back-to-back for the first time this season when they visit New Jersey. This game will also mark the first time former Devil Blake Coleman will return to New Jersey since he was traded to the Tampa Bay Lightning on Feb. 16, 2020. Coleman is in the first year of a six-year contract with Calgary and has won two Stanley Cups with the Lightning since he was last in New Jersey.
By the Numbers:
It's been a while since the Devils have beaten the Flames. Calgary has gone six straight games with a victory against New Jersey, the last Devils victory coming on Jan. 14, 2017, a 2-1 victory.
Elias Lindholm is one of five players with a league-leading six goals to start the season. He is joined by Connor McDavid (EDM), Kyle Connor (WPG), Tyler Bertuzzi (DET) and Anze Kopitar (LAK) atop the league leaderboard.
