The Devils held their 12th Annual Charity Golf Classic on Wednesday, bringing together past and present players to help raise funds for the club’s Alumni Association.

With blue skies and temperatures in the mid-80s, the golfers couldn’t have asked for better conditions at the Upper Montclair Country Club in Clifton.

“We had a perfect day, obviously,” Ken Daneyko said. “I see there were a lot of really good scores. I know there were too many hockey players playing together and that’s all they do all summer so they had some pretty impressive scores.”

In team play, Martin Brodeur anchored his foursome to a third-place finish with a score of 59. Second place went to the group of Devils Chairman/Managing Partner Jeff Vanderbeek, Andy Greene, Jacob Josefson and goaltending coach Chris Terreri, which finished at 58. The top squad was led by Johan Hedberg and came in at a 16-under-par 56.

Other Devils demonstrated their talents from the tee. Matt Corrente and Nick Palmieri accounted for two of the day’s longest drives. Devils Co-Chairman Mike Gilfillan captured one of the closest to the hole awards at 4 ft., 5 in.

A morning of golf was followed by a reception, auction and raffle. Among the items auctioned off was an all-inclusive trip to Toronto trip that included a visit to the Hockey Hall of Fame and tickets to see the Devils battle the Maple Leafs at Air Canada Centre. Another package featured a private hockey clinic with a Devils alumnus.

Daneyko spoke at the reception on behalf of the Alumni Association.

“A lot of this money goes to some great causes throughout the community and certainly for children’s charities along the way,” he said. “We also play alumni games; some of us old farts still get on the ice to do the best we can, but it’s always for great causes.”

The association gives back to the community through charitable endeavors such as alumni games and college scholarships for high school ice hockey players in the Garden State.

The golf outing marks an unofficial end to the Devils' offseason. Rookies report to training camp on Thursday morning, followed by veterans on Friday.
