Prudential and the New Jersey Devils salute the Heroes Among Us. We recently honored WWII Army Veteran Gene Moretti at The Rock. Born in 1917, Gene and his brother Joseph volunteered to serve their country at the beginning of World War 2, and in 1942, Gene's unit took part in the first U.S. invasion of enemy territory known as Operation Torch. Gene participated in the Invasion of Sicily, and in March 1944, his unit was assigned to Naples, where the previously dormant volcano Mount Vesuvius erupted and the U.S. airfield was hit by lava, resulting in the loss of 80 planes. Gene's brother Joseph lost his life serving our country on the USS Bunker hill, and Gene suffered permanent hearing loss after an attack on the USS Lewis Morris.
After the war, Gene return home and married the love of his life Maria, and they were together for 66 before she passed away in 2014. Gene will turn 100 years old this month and was joined by his family at Prudential Center on Jan. 2 to watch the Devils host the Bruins.
