Devils head coach Lindy Ruff said the team's lack of compete, inability to win battles, and not showing up led to the loss.
"It was probably the worst game I've seen us play. Didn't win the compete battles early, didn't engage early, conveniently second on a lot of plays," Ruff said. "You know what your responsibility on the ice, you know what your responsibility for getting ready for the game."
"We're just not ready, we weren't ready and we have to find a way. There's no excuse there, we just have to be ready," Devils Captain Nico Hischier said after the game. "Everybody has to do that individually, and there's just no excuse. We're not winning a game like the way we played tonight."
When it came to how his team could improve their compete and show up stronger, Ruff explained that his players need to fix this problem.
"It has to come from the group, it has to come from inside, it has to come from linemate to linemate, it has to come from d-partner to d-partner, saying 'it's time to get going,'" said Ruff.
Some takeaways from today's contest:
The loss Friday brings New Jersey's record to 8-6-4 and New Jersey is sixth in the standings.
