Here are some observations from the game...
- New Jersey's captain keeps coming to play. Hischier extended his goal-scoring streak to four games (five total) with a third-period tally. With an assist to boot, Hischier has six points (5G-1A) in his past four games.
"He's getting more pucks to the net," Ruff said. "He's had some opportunities and he's made some plays, some guys have made some plays for him to finish. He had lots of opportunities prior to that that he didn't finish, finally pucks are starting to go in for him."
- The Devils opened the scoring in the second period with a (different) trifecta of centers. That would be the Zacha-Hughes-Sharangovich unit. The play began when Zacha beat Penguins defenseman Mike Matheson at the blue line and chipped ahead to Sharangovich, who dished across to Hughes. In his first game since prior to the All-Star break, Hughes ripped a shot near side that beat goalie Tristan Jarry on the blocker side.
- The Devils thoughtthey opened the scoring earlier in the period after P.K. Subban made a brilliant effort to skate the puck end-to-end, including a just at the circles, to get a shot on goal from close range. Studenic was able to find the loose rebound in the paint and score, however Subban had fallen on Jarry and the goal was waved off due to goaltender interference.
"I was debating challenging it but PK was in there on his own, nobody pushed him in," Ruff said. "(Subban) was on top of him before the puck was in."
- Jon Gillies has continued to really shine between the pipes for the Devils. (record last 3). He put together another incredible effort against an offensively stacked Penguins team. In the first period he made a spectacular kick save on a semi-breakaway for Jeff Carter. In the third period with the game tied at 2-2 and Pittsburgh on a power play, he made a split pad save to deny Jake Guentzel on a tic-tac-toe set up.
"I'm just focusing on areas that I'm good at and focusing on getting my weaknesses better," Gillies said. "It's going in the right direction but I have a long way to improve."
- The Devils did a lot of lineup shuffling for the contest. They opened the game by moving Hischier to wing and playing with Hughes and Sharangovich. That lasted one period. The team then moved Pavel Zacha from center to wing with Hughes and Sharangovich. The club also lost Andreas Johnsson after warmup to a lower-body injury.
"(Johnsson) somehow got hurt before the game," Ruff said. "We had to take him out."
