Devils edged in OT by Oilers

Three Things We Learned

by Julie Robenhymer / newjerseydevils.com

The Devils lost, 3-2, in overtime against Edmonton Thursday night despite goals by Travis Zajac and Steven Santini, his first in the NHL. Here's what we learned:

1) The Devils played with enough effort to make head coach John Hynes happy, but it wasn't enough to get the win. They spent the majority of the game in their own zone and were outshot 34-18.

2) Taylor Hall, who fired the shot that led to Santini's goal, is officially a former Oiler. After a warm and fuzzy moment during the first TV timeout when the fans gave him a standing ovation after a video tribute, he was given a four-minute penalty for high sticking at the start of the second period and started hearing some boos any time he touched the puck by the end of the game.

3) If you're going to get caught on a bad line change, don't do it in overtime and definitely not while Connor McDavid is on the ice.

The Devils (16-18-9) will faceoff against the Calgary Flames (23-19-2) tonight at 9 p.m. ET.
