PRE-GAME STORY

RALEIGH, N.C. - The Devils held a morning skate at PNC Arena in Raleigh ahead of facing the Hurricanes. There were several updates on the injury front.
Forward Miles Wood was on the ice for the team. He had to leave practice early Monday and required help off the ice.
Defenseman John Marino (upper-body) joined the team for practice for the first time since suffering his being out of the lineup in a non-contact capacity. Forward Nathan Bastian (upper-body) skated with his teammates for the second day in a row.
Wood: Good to Go
Despite the scare at Monday's practice, Wood deemed himself ready to play.
"I should be good to go," he said following the morning skate.
Head coach Lindy Ruff affirmed: "Looks like Miles should play tonight,"
Wood had collided with defenseman Jonas Seigenthaler in that practice scare.
"It is what it is. It's hockey," Wood said. "It was just a freak thing that happened, me and 'Siegs' out there."
Forecheck
The Hurricanes are one of the toughest teams in the NHL in terms of their forecheck. They are speedy to pucks in the offensive zone and put a lot of pressure on defenseman going back to make a quick read and execute. And if they don't, the Canes will engage and battle for the puck on the boards.
"They come really hard. We need to move pucks quickly," defenseman Ryan Graves said. "We can't try to beat guys 1-on-1. You have to keep things moving and try to back off their pressure by moving things in your own zone. If you're breaking out quickly and efficiently, they can't forecheck as hard."
Two critical junctures will be the goaltender-defenseman handoff. Anything the Devils goaltender can do to make it easier for his blueliners will be crucial. And the forwards tracking back into the defensive zone to provide outlets for the defensemen to break the puck out as soon as possible.
"We have to make sure we get back in a hurry. We have to win the wall battles," Ruff said. "We know they're aggressive down the walls. We win the battles we'll be able to create some opportunities. At the same time, we know that when they do win them, we have to stay in structure."
Best Foote Forward
The Devils recalled forward Nolan Foote from Utica of the American Hockey League as a precaution with the uncertainty with Wood.
Foote leads the Comets with 13 goals on the year and places third on the team with 19 points in 33 games.
"Our team is playing really well right now. I'm playing with some good linemates like (Andreas) Johnsson," Foote said. "I started to shoot a lot more and it started to go in.
"Coaches told me to hit the net more and so I'm trying to hit the net a little bit more, just getting more shots on net, more volume of shots and more goals tend to go in."

PREVIEW

DEVILS (25-12-3) at HURRICANES (25-8-7)
TV: 7 p.m. ET; Televised on ESPN+
Head-to-Head
The Devils are 0-1-1 against the Hurricanes this season, losing 4-1 in Carolina Dec. 20 and dropping a 5-4 shootout in Newark on Jan. 1.
Jesper Bratt leads the Devils with two goals and four points against Carolina. Former Devil Stefan Noesen, who is currently injured, leads the Canes with three points (1g-2a) against his old club.
Devils Team Scope:
The Devils are coming off a dramatic come-from-behind overtime victory, 4-3, against the New York Rangers at Prudential Center Saturday afternoon. New Jersey is 3-1-1 in its past five games, and is 14-2-1 on the road this season.
Forward Jack Hughes, who was named the team's All-Star representative, was named the NHL's Second Star of the Week after posting five goals and seven points in three games. He has 19 goals in his past 20 games, including eight in the last five. Captain Nico Hischier has a career-high (tied) seven-game scoring streak with nine points (5g-4a). Jesper Bratt has a five-game scoring streak (3g-4a).
Hurricanes Team Scope:
The Hurricanes set a franchise record with 11-straight victories and a 15-0-2 run, including a 5-4 shootout win at New Jersey on New Year's Day. But since then, the club has hit a funk, going 0-2-1. Carolina still holds the No. 1 spot in the Metro Division with 57 points.
Forward Andrei Svechnikov was named to as the club's NHL All-Star representative. He has a team-high 19 goals on the year. Followed by Martin Necas, who has 17 and leads the club with 38 points.
The Canes have a strong tandem in goal with Antii Raanta and Pyotr Kochetkov. Raanta is 10-2-3 and is 7-0-1 in his last eight decisions. Kochetkov is 10-3-4 with a 2.20 goals-against average and .919 save percentage.
By the Numbers:
The Devils have a +31 goal differential, ranking fourth in the NHL. Boston is first at +69. Nice.
Hurricanes coach Rod Brind'Amour is one win shy of career No. 200. If he defeats the Devils, he would be the third-fastest coach to 200 wins in league history (329 games).
