Devils acquire Smith-Pelly from Montreal

The New Jersey Devils today acquired forward Devante Smith-Pelly from Montreal in exchange for forward Stefan Matteau. The announcement was made by Devils’ Executive Vice President/General Manager Ray Shero.

Smith-Pelly, 23, totaled 6g-6a-12pts, including a career-high three game-winning goals, and 22 PIM in 46 games with the Canadiens this season. He was acquired by Montreal from Anaheim on Feb. 24, 2015. Smith-Pelly has recorded 21g-34a-55pts and 64 PIM in 195 career NHL games with the Habs and the Ducks. He has also added 6g-2a-8pts in 24 Stanley Cup Playoff contests. Smith-Pelly made his NHL debut with Anaheim on Oct. 7, 2011 at Buffalo and scored his first goal on Nov. 9, 2011 vs. Nashville.

The native of Scarborough, Ontario, was Anaheim’s third choice (second round), 42nd overall, in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft. He played three seasons with St. Michael’s (OHL) from 2008-11 and registered 78g-75a-153pts and 109 PIM in 184 career games for the Majors. In 2009-10, he was selected to play in the league’s mid-season All-Star Game. Smith-Pelly led the league with 15g during the 2011 playoffs en route to the OHL Finals.

He also represented St. Michael’s at the 2011 Memorial Cup, where he posted 3g-3a-6pts in five games and was named to the tournament’s All-Star Team. Smith-Pelly skated for Team Canada at the 2012 World Junior Championships but was injured in the opening tournament.
