The Devils have acquired defenseman Martin Skoula from the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for a fifth-round pick in the 2010 Entry Draft.

Skoula, 30, tallied three goals and five assists in 33 games this season with Pittsburgh. On Tuesday, the Penguins shipped Skoula and 21-year-old forward Luca Caputi to Toronto for Alexei Ponikarovsky.

Skoula brings a 6-3, 225-lb. frame to the Devils blueline. Drafted 17th overall by Colorado in 1998, he was a member of the Avalanche squad that beat the Devils in the 2001 Stanley Cup Finals.

Before signing with the Penguins as a free agent last summer, Skoula spent three-plus seasons in Minnesota under Jacques Lemaire. The Wild acquired Skoula from Dallas in a 2005-06 deal that sent Willie Mitchell to the Stars.

The native of Litomerice, Czech Rep., has collected 44 goals and 149 assists in 757 career games with Colorado, Anaheim, Dallas, Minnesota and Pittsburgh.
