DeBoer: 'We're capable of winning a Stanley Cup'

by Eric Marin / New Jersey Devils

Peter DeBoer didn't mince words Wednesday when asked what he thought the Devils are capable of this season.

"I think we're capable of winning a Stanley Cup," the head coach said. "I think we go into every season with that mindset. We've got a lot of guys in that room and on this team that, less than 24 months ago, were playing in Game 6 of a Stanley Cup Final. I think that's our mindset."

DeBoer will start Cory Schneider in Thursday's opener in Pittsburgh, ending Martin Brodeur's NHL-record streak of consecutive season openers with the same club at 18.

"It actually ended up being a fairly easy decision just based on the last week and a half Marty's had and what he's dealt with," DeBoer said. "There was no sense, if we were able to give him the extra day with back-to-back games, it just felt like the right thing to do."

The Devils are back to open their home schedule against the Islanders on Friday.
