The 14th Winter Olympics (1984) took place in Sarajevo, Yugoslavia. The socialist country beat out Sapporo, Japan, and Gothenburg, Sweden, to claim the title of host city. The men's ice hockey tournament ended with the Soviet Union – stacked with future Devils Viacheslav Fetisov, Alexei Kasatonov, Igor Larionov and Sergei Starikov, among other would-be NHLers – earning the gold, avenging their loss to the Miracle on Ice team in 1980's medal round. The Czechs got the silver in Sarajevo, while Sweden won bronze.
Meanwhile, the fourth place Canadian squad featured a young defenseman by the name of Bruce Driver. Ever hear of him? I ran into the Devils Alumni last night, and he was gracious enough to share his memories of that winter in '84.
