Brodeur named 'First Star' of the week

by Staff Writer / New Jersey Devils – Martin Brodeur has been named the NHL's 'First Star' for the week ending March 1.

Brodeur returned to the Devils lineup after missing 50 games due to injury and stopped 66 of 68 shots in posting a 3-0-0 record with a 0.67 goals-against average, .971 save percentage and two shutouts. [ Brodeur highlights]

Brodeur recorded a shutout in his first appearance since Nov. 1, making 24 saves in a 4-0 victory over the Colorado Avalanche Feb. 26. He turned aside 15 shots in a 7-2 victory over the Florida Panthers Feb. 28 and concluded the week by posting his 100th career shutout, making 27 stops in a 3-0 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers Mar. 1.

The four-time Vezina Trophy winner increased his career victories total to 547, four shy of all-time leader Patrick Roy, and needs three shutouts to tie all-time leader Terry Sawchuk.

Calgary's Jarome Iginla and Atlanta's Ilya Kovalchuk were each named the week's Second and Third stars, respectively.
