The Barrie Colts were pushed to the brink of elimination with a 6-3 loss in Game 3 of their OHL Eastern Conference Final against the Niagara IceDogs on Monday.
Devils prospect Mackenzie Blackwood, who has started all three games of the series, made 36 saves in the setback. He has faced 120 Niagara shots in the best-of-seven set, turning away 108. The surging IceDogs are 11-1 in the postseason and have won nine in a row.
Game 4 is Wednesday at Niagara.
After the teams traded goals in the opening frame, Barrie struck twice in the second to flip a 2-1 deficit into a 3-2 lead. But Niagara responded 42 seconds later with the first of four unanswered goals – three in the second period and one in the third – while outshooting the Colts, 30-16 over the final 40 minutes.
Blackwood, New Jersey's second-round pick at last year's Draft, is one of six finalists for OHL Goaltender of the Year. He posted 28 wins in the regular season with a 2.72 goals-against average, .921 save percentage and three shutouts.
