PRE-GAME STORY

NEWARK, N.J. - After surviving a bout of illness that ran through the team, the Devils hit the ice Thursday for their morning skate.
Forward Jesper Boqvist was held off the ice and won't play in tonight's game for precautionary reasons. He has not been added to the COVID-19 protocol. The team is just awaiting some test results.
Captain Nico Hischier and defensemen Ryan Graves and Christian Jaros remain in protocol and off the ice.
"(Hischier) is doing OK," said forward Jesper Bratt, one of the Hischier's best friends on the team. "He's a player that we want and we need on the ice every single night. He's a huge part of our organization. It's a tough loss to lose that kind of guy for a couple games. He seems to be doing well, and his recovery has been pretty easy it seems like. Hopefully, we see him soon."
The Devils used the following workflow…
Zacha - Hughes - Bratt
Johnsson - Mercer - Tatar
Kuokkanen - Sharangovich - Studenic
Vesey - McLeod - Bastian
Smith - Hamilton
Siegenthaler - Severson
Bahl - Subban
License to Ill
The illness bug made its way through the locker room and nearly every player was affected by it. Most of the players were playing less than 100 percent in Tuesday's 6-1 loss in Philadelphia.
"The good news, everybody is doing better," head coach Lindy Ruff said. "We have a couple question marks on the health-side, but where the team was at in Philly to where they are today, we're in a better place than we were."
Bratt was one of the players under the weather that is still recovering.
"Today was a good practice and step in the right direction," he said. "I felt a little more comfortable and confident and more speedy on the ice. Today was a good day."
New Guy
With Jonathan Bernier out of the lineup indefinitely due to a hip injury, the Devils were looking to add depth to their goaltending position. The team acquired netminder Jon Gillies from St. Louis Wednesday afternoon and he joined the team for the morning skate.
"This is an opportunity that I'm really excited for," Gillies said. "It's really nice to be in a place with a nice challenge in front of me, a place to grow, and an opportunity to grab ahold of."
Gillies admitted that he "always struggles" with answering his goaltending style. But did offer this: "Big, I like to think I move well for my size. My parents made sure I played a lot of other sports besides hockey, so decently athletic. I'm not overly technical, I just try to stop the puck no matter what. That's really what it comes down to."
Gillies, a New Hampshire native, has several connections to the Devils organization. He played youth hockey with Miles Wood and Ryan Fitzgerald, son of general manager Tom Fitzgerald. Gillies was coached by Wood's father as a child.
Vegas, Baby, Vegas
The Devils welcome in the Vegas Golden Knights to Prudential Center tonight. Vegas has won five of its last six games and presents a complete game based on defense and speed.
"We have Vegas coming into our building. They're playing well. They're a hot team," defenseman Damon Severson said. "They don't mess around. They come into teams' buildings, they take points and then they get out. We want to slow them down tonight. We have to raise our level."
"They're a good, tight team," Bratt said. "They play good defensively. They have some skill and speed upfront. We have to bring our A game, and we're going to have to play the right way to win this type of game."
Stringing Together
As the Devils try to pull themselves back into the playoff hunt, they'll need to make up some lost ground in their current 1-6-1 skid. In order to get back in the postseason chase, New Jersey will not only have to stop the bleeding, but at some point they'll have to string a few multi-game winning streaks together.
"It's a hard league and you're playing against a team that wants to win too. For us it's more learning about the championship mentality, and learning how to win games," Bratt said. "For us it's just maturing and becoming more of a championship team. Maybe that's playing more simple at the end of games. That's something we need to learn. Hopefully, it will come with the process of getting better."
And putting together those winning streaks are what the team needs to do in order to take the next step in the club's overall development.
"One of the best ways to develop a winning culture is by winning, whether you're a young team or not," Severson said. "If you're always losing and keep saying develop, develop, develop, you're never going to be a winner because you've always lost."

Head-to-Head
The Devils and Vegas Golden Knights meet for the first time since March 3, 2020, and for the first time in Newark since Dec 3, 2019 - over two years ago.
Devils team scope:
The Devils have lost three straight games and seven of their last eight (1-6-1). What's worse is the team is currently battling a bout with illness, both COVID-19 (which has sidelined Nico Hischier, Ryan Graves and Christian Jaros) and non-COVID (which is affecting the rest of the team).
The Devils are also without goaltender Jonathan Bernier, who was shut down last week due to a season-long lingering hip injury. The club traded for St. Louis netminder Jon Gillies to help fill the gap left by Bernier.
Golden Knights team scope:
Vegas begins a four-game east coast swing at Boston, Jersey, NY Rangers and NY Islanders. The club began the road trip with a 4-1 victory in Boston Tuesday. The Golden Knights have won five of their last six games. The Knights are three points behind Anaheim for the Pacific Division lead.
Chandler Stephenson paces the club with 20 assists and 29 points. Max Pacioretty, who scored twice against Boston, and Jonathan Marchessault each have a team-best 12 goals.
By the Numbers:
New Jersey has surrendered a league-high five shorthanded goals.
The Golden Knights scored zero - yes, zero - power-play goals in the first 10 games of the season, going 0-for-19. Since then, they've gone 12-for-51 (23.5%).
