Forward Steve Downie returned to the Coyotes lineup on Thursday night at Joe Louis Arena after nearly a month-long absence.
Downie, who suffered an upper-body injury vs. Anaheim on Nov. 9 and missed the next 10 games, made an impact in his return by setting up Arizona’s lone goal in a 5-1 loss to the Red Wings.
Trailing 3-0, Downie assisted on Jordan Martinook’s goal at 5:52 of the second period with a crisp behind-the-net pass to get the Coyotes back into the game.
Downie logged 12:28 of ice time in his first game back. He delivered three hits plus his third assist of the season.
“He made a good play on our goal,” Head Coach Dave Tippett said. “He hadn’t played in 10 games so it was good to get him back in there.”
The Coyotes removed Downie from the injured-reserve list before the game. To make room for him on the roster, they assigned forward Craig Cunningham to the American Hockey League.
• The Coyotes briefly took a 1-0 lead at 1:21 of the first period when defenseman Klas Dahlbeck ripped a shot past Red Wings goalie Jimmy Howard for his third goal of the season. Detroit Head Coach Jeff Blashill challenged the goal contending that Coyotes defenseman Connor Murphy was off-side on the play.
After video review, Dahlbeck’s goal was disallowed.
Here’s the official ruling by the NHL:
“At 1:21 of the first period in the Coyotes/Red Wings game, Detroit requested a Coach’s Challenge to review whether Arizona was off-side prior to Klas Dahlbeck's goal.
After reviewing all available replays and consulting with NHL Hockey Operations staff, the Linesman determined that Arizona's Connor Murphy was off-side prior to the goal. According to Rule 78.7, ‘The standard for overturning the call in the event of a ‘GOAL’ call on the ice is that the Linesman, after reviewing any and all available replays and consulting with the Toronto Video Room, determines that one or more Players on the attacking team preceded the puck into the attacking zone prior to the goal being scored and that, as a result, the play should have been stopped for an “Off-side” infraction; where this standard is met, the goal will be disallowed.’
Therefore the original call is overturned – no goal Arizona Coyotes.”
Head Coach Dave Tippett said he thinks the call was correct.
“If Murphy would have had his toe on the ice, or just dragged his toe, it probably would have been good, but he takes a stride just as the puck’s going in,” Tippett said. “I mean it’s an awful close call but it looks like the right call.”
• Anders Lindback stopped 26 of the 28 shots he faced in two periods after replacing starter Mike Smith, who gave up three goals on 16 shots in the first period, including two within the final minute. It was the fourth time this season Lindback was sent into a game to replace Smith.
• Captain Shane Doan missed his fifth consecutive game because of a lower-body injury. Head Coach Dave Tippett said Doan might play Friday at Buffalo.
