'Yotes Notes: Domingue Keys Lengthy Shootout Win

Goalie Louis Domingue made a career-high 44 saves, plus 10 more in an 11-round shootout, to key Arizona's 3-2 win over Los Angeles on Tuesday night at the Staples Center.
The shootout was the second longest in franchise history, but Domingue said he wasn't thinking about the length of the skills competition as it dragged on and on.
"I just play and I'm confident in my ability in shootouts and I'm confident in our team to score goals," Domingue said. "Usually we do it faster but it took a little longer today. We gave a good show."

Domingue said he was surprised he played so well because he didn't feel sharp in recent practices. He also said he was surprised the Kings opted to shoot first in the shootout; he felt that put more pressure on them.
"It just worked out," Domingue said. "There's going to be other nights where they're going to score a couple goals and we won't, so tonight it was on our side."
Domingue has won his past three starts and he stopped 107 of 113 shots in those wins, not counting the shootout. He's faced 15 shootout shots this season and stopped all but one.
"He did very well, in the game and in the shootout," Head Coach Dave Tippett said of Domingue, who played at Staples Center, the rink in which he was drafted 138th overall in 2010, for the first time. "He was strong in net, strong for the game."

• Arizona's franchise record for longest shootout is 12 rounds. That happened on Feb. 22, 2008 vs. Colorado. The Avalanche won 3-2.
Tippett joked that Tuesday's shootout was so long he started to seek advice from starting goalie Mike Smith about which player he should send out on the ice to shoot next.
"I was looking down (the bench) at 'Smitty,'" Tippett said. "I was telling him 'Give me your suggestions.'"
• The Coyotes entered the game with 15 shootout shots on the season. They took 11 on Tuesday.
• Tippett loved the way the Coyotes, who have won three consecutive games, didn't quit after they fell behind late in the third period.
"The whole group, they continue to work hard," Tippett said. "They want to play with pride and ... play hard every night. That's what we're getting ... Our last string of games here have been really strong."

• Forward Max Domi, who had multiple chances to score a goal but didn't on Monday vs. Colorado, scored twice on Tuesday for his first muti-goal game of the season and sixth of his short NHL career.
"That's usually how this game works, to be honest," Domi said. "That's what makes it so fun, is sometimes you get chances and they don't go in and other times you get a couple chances and both of them go in."
Domi said playing in dramatic games such as this one vs. teams fighting to make the Stanley Cup Playoffs will serve the young Coyotes well.
"This was a big game for them so it's a good test for us and kind of helps us grow as a team," Domi said. "It's good experience and it was nice to get a win."

• Rookie Tony DeAngelo, who had never taken a shootout shot in an NHL game, waited patiently to hear Tippett call his name on Tuesday.
"Somebody had to win it so I'll take it," DeAngelo said about his shot past Kings goalie Ben Bishop. "I knew what I was going to do the whole way. (I) kind of was watching the way he was going on some shots there, so I tried to figure maybe move him left to right and it worked."

• Forward Radim Vrbata assisted on Domi's second goal with 45 seconds left in the third period. It was Vrbata's 50th point of the season. He has reached the 50-point plateau five times in his NHL career.
• Rookie Brendan Perlini failed to stretch his goal-scoring streak to four games, but he did score Arizona's first of two shootout goals.
• Domingue debuted new red goalie pads.
"They worked," he said with a smile.
