Final Score: Rangers 7, Coyotes 3

                                      • -
The Coyotes got off to a fast start in Saturday night's (Jan. 22) game with the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden and held a 3-1 lead, but a hat trick from Chris Kreider and two goals from Jacob Trouba were a part of a six-goal outburst down the stretch as the Rangers battled back to win 7-3.
"We played really well in the first. We executed well, we played with a lot of focus, drive and we had urgency. It was a good period," said Head Coach André Tourigny. "Their goalie is really good, and when we found a way to score it gave us confidence. Even at the start of the second period we played really well until we gave up that goal on [our] power play. That turned the game around mentally and in the momentum of the game."
The Coyotes came out of the gates hot with arguably their best period of the season. Liam O'Brien registered the game's first tally by crashing the net and converting on a juicy rebound.

However just 39 seconds later, the Rangers responded with an equalizer. Trouba snapped a shot from the blue line that made its way through traffic that got New York on the board. Outshooting the Rangers 16-4 in the opening period, the Coyotes regained the lead when Christian Fischer found Andrew Ladd all along on the doorstep who made it 2-1 with a quick shot from between the hashes.

The Coyotes extended the lead to 3-1 in the second period when Clayton Keller scored his 15th of the season, but things unraveled the rest of the frame. A shorthanded goal from Kreider began a run of four unanswered goals in just the second period, complimented by Juliane Gauthier, Artemi Panarin and Kreider again - all coming in a 7:12 span.
"There was great talk in between the [first and second] period and everyone was feeling pretty good," said Kyle Capobianco. "When their big guns get going, it's pretty tough. They just fed off the energy; the atmosphere was pretty great in here. I think they just took it to another level.
"I can't remember exactly if there was a certain play [that shifted the momentum], but we could feel the energy and they started to feed off the crowd. They kind of took it to us."
In the third period, Trouba added another to widen the lead to 6-3 and Kreider scored his third goal of the night later on to complete the hat trick.

Tourigny's Take:"We started the second period well and we had our chances, but we gave that goal on their penalty kill and the game turned around. From there I did not like the way we fought and the grit we had and all that was not there. That's the part we're sour about."

Kyle Capobianco said: "We have a good group. We're going to take a day off here, and we know we have a big challenge coming up in Pittsburgh. They have some big guns too. I think we just need to stick to what we've been doing; establish our forecheck and get shots."

Notable:
Clayton Keller notched his 15th goal of the season to surpass his total from last season.
• Keller's goal was the 83rd of his career, putting him into the Top-25 in franchise history.
Nick Schmaltz has found the scoresheet in all seven games he's played the Rangers, totaling 1-10-11. The seven-game run is his longest ever against an NHL opponent.
Liam O'Brien scored his second goal of the season, the first time in his career he's tallied twice in a campaign.
Loui Eriksson notched his eighth assist of the campaign, his highest total in a season since 2018-19 with the Canucks (18).
Phil Kessel played in his 50th career game against the Rangers, seeing 16:30 of time on ice.
Travis Boyd has registered a point in three of his last four games and is one point shy of tying his single-season career-high of 20 back in 2018-19 with Washington.
• The Coyotes' 16 shots in the first period are the most they've tallied in a period this season and the four shots by the Rangers in that frame are tied for the fewest the Coyotes have allowed in a regulation period this season.
