Information, observations and anecdotes about the Coyotes
as told by Dave Vest, the team's V.P. of News Content
That was the only rule Coyotes rookie Mikkel Boedker
had to follow when he tagged along with his older brother Mats and Mats’ friend Jannik Hansen when they all went to play street hockey as young boys in Denmark.
Boedker and Hansen, a forward with the Vancouver Canucks, both took the ice with 18 points on Thursday night at General Motors Place in what I'm told is the first NHL game featuring two Danish players.
“They’d always ask me to come and play, but my brother would always tell me ‘no whining or you are out,’” Boedker recalled with a smile on Thursday.
The younger Boedker didn’t whine, and he learned to play the game with the older boys.
“He was always welcome to play with us because he was a good hockey player,” Hansen said.
Hansen, 22, and Boedker, 19, have remained pals throughout the years despite their age difference. After Thursday’s game, they chatted outside the Canucks locker room and shared some laughs.
Boedker said the two of them never talked about making it to the NHL when they were younger, let alone playing in the same NHL game. A few years later, Boedker has 45 games on his NHL resume. Ditto Hansen.
I asked Hansen if he was surprised that Boedker has reached the NHL at such a young age.
“Not at all,” Hansen said. “He’s an extremely good player. Skating-wise and skill-wise he’s right up there with the best. It’s a great tribute to him that he made it to the NHL right out of the draft.”
Forward Steven Reinprecht suffered a minor injury during Thursday's game and played just 8:36. He is expected to play on Saturday at Calgary.
Coyotes Head Coach Wayne Gretzky told reporters before the game that media reports/ speculation regarding the team’s financial situation are not distracting his players.
“Our responsibility is to come and show up and play, and play the best we can,” Gretzky said. “That’s all we can worry about. … I don’t think the players even concern themselves with it. It’s not something they should concern themselves with.”
