Information, observations and anecdotes about the Coyotes
as told by Dave Vest, the team's V.P. of News Content
Coyotes players reported to training camp Friday morning at Jobing.com Arena with plenty on their plates but nothing in their bellies. That’s because they weren’t allowed to eat anything until after taking their physical exams.
Hunger Pang, not Darren, was all over the place for a change.
Other off-ice chores on the day before camp “really” starts included filling out paperwork, having head shots taken for the media guide and program, and shooting videos for various TV stations and the Jumbotron.
Yeah, make no mistake, it was a hectic morning for everyone inside the arena as the players were escorted from station to station. Wardrobe changes were key; Red jersey on, red jersey off. White jersey on, white jersey off. Red jersey back on….you get the picture.
Some other observations:
Newcomer Kurt Sauer was a hit with the group shooting the Jumbotron messages. Look for him to get you pumped up during home games.Shane Doan
and Peter Mueller filmed a spot with XTRA Sports 910 morning-show hosts Dan Bickley and Mike Jurecki. It was fun seeing Bickley and MJ clowning with Doan and Mueller on the ice dressed in full Coyotes gear – except for skates.Martin Hanzal
was in the building and getting around pretty well for a guy who just had back surgery two months ago. I laughed listening to stories about how Hanzal sometimes gets mistaken for Ashton Kutcher.
Doan, naturally, had the most things to do on Friday morning, but he did them all with a smile. Well, he did most of them with a smile. Let’s just say he’s not a big fan of the physical testing the players have to go through. “I hate it,” he told me. “…What happens if I do bad or what happens if I fail?”
As for all the commercials he had to shoot and all the pictures he had to take, Doan is fine with that stuff.
“Sure, sometimes it gets a little monotonous, but hey, we get to do a lot of fun things on this day and a lot of people would love to get to do the stuff we do.”
