Information, observations and anecdotes about the Coyotes
as told by Dave Vest, the team's V.P. of News Content
Remember when you were young and a new kid showed up at school one day? Remember how exciting that was for everyone involved? Well, that was kind of the vibe, multiplied by seven, at the Coyotes morning skate on Thursday at the TD Banknorth Garden in Boston.
Matthew Lombardi, Brandon Prust, Scottie Upshall, Petr Prucha, Nigel Dawes, Dmitri Kalinin and Josh Tordjman all were there mingling with their new teammates. Some of them already knew one or two of their new teammates, but most didn’t and it was fun watching them introduce themselves to each other and chat about the team, the coaches, the Valley, the team’s awesome Web site, etc. Ok, I added that part about the Web site.
Lombardi already knew forward Steven Reinprecht and defenseman David Hale from their days in Calgary together. Lombardi also knows Doan from when they played together for Team Canada in the 2007 IIHF World Championship. Doan, Lombardi and Rick Nash were linemates in that tournament, which Canada won.
Check out how both Doan and Lombardi feel about being reunited with the Coyotes:
• General Manager Don Maloney was a very busy man on Wednesday making four trades. On Thursday, I spotted him in the lobby of our very cool hotel in Boston – which was once, I kid you not, a prison – and we chatted for a few minutes about what transpired in the hours before the trade deadline. I was going to type it all out for you in this blog, but I’m a little under the weather today. So, click here
to listen for yourself.
• Coyotes TV Play-By-Play Announcer Dave Strader told me a great line Upshall gave him on Thursday and I will share it with you here. Asked how it felt to play at Boston on Tuesday with the Philadelphia Flyers and then again on Thursday with the Coyotes, Upshall said: “It’s going to be tough. Playing against (Bruins defenseman) Zdeno Chara once is like playing 10 games.”
• FYI, forward Steven Goertzen was re-assigned to the team's top affiliate in San Antonio before Wednesday's trade deadline.
