Coyotes captain Shane Doan is taking a break this week from his informal workouts at the Alltel Ice Den in Scottsdale for a pretty good reason. Doan is in Calgary attending Team Canada’s Olympics orientation camp.

Shane Doan (playing for Canada in 2004).

Doan will practice with Canada's "Team White" until Wednesday. A scrimmage against "Team Red" will be played Thursday.

Doan has captained Team Canada in several international tournaments and played for Canada in the 2006 Olympics. He is just one of 46 players at the camp. The roster will be pared to 23 in December. Canada, of course, is hosting the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver next February. The NHL will suspend its 2009-10 season so its players can participate.

Unlike Doan, yours truly did attend the informal workout at the Alltel Ice Den on Monday and saw several familiar faces skating including Daniel Winnik, Keith Yandle, Kurt Sauer, Zbynek Michalek, Ed Jovanovski, Kyle Turris, Peter Mueller and Mikkel Boedker, to name a few.

One player on the ice Monday that I did not recognize was a huge man that dwarfed all of the players listed above. For a brief moment I thought Boston’s Zdeno Chara had crashed the party, but after watching him skate I quickly realized it was not Chara - nor any other NHL player. As it turns out, the gigantic forward was former NBA player Greg Ostertag, a Scottsdale resident who likes to play ice hockey as a hobby.

The informal workouts, staged by Athletes Resource, will continue until the end of next week.

For those who have lost track of the team’s court proceedings, remember that the next significant court date is Sept. 2. That is the day that Judge Redfield T. Baum will hear arguments regarding whether Canadian businessman Jim Balsillie should be allowed to bid on the team at the auction on Sept. 10.

We continue to work on a photo gallery for and I would like to invite all Coyotes fans to help us build it.

Here’s the deal: The premise of the photo gallery is to show pictures of Coyotes fans wearing Coyotes apparel while sitting or standing in front of a recognizable landmark worldwide. For example, if you have a photo of yourself wearing Coyotes apparel while standing on the rim of the Grand Canyon or atop the Empire State Building or kissing the Blarney Stone, please send it to as a .jpg file. (Also, please make sure you identify whoever is in the photo.) Once we have gathered enough photos for a photo gallery, we will post it.

Thanks for reading.
