Team North America Eager for First Exhibition Game at World Cup of Hockey

by Steve Peters / Arizona Coyotes

EDITOR'S NOTE: Longtime Coyotes Video Coach Steve Peters is taking part in the 2016 World Cup of Hockey as Video Coach for Team North America. Peters is chronicling his experience at the world-class tournament with reports here at ArizonaCoyotes.com. Here's his second report:

QUEBEC CITY -- The World Cup of Hockey begins next week, and Team North America has spent the past three days practicing and getting to know each other on and off the ice.

The one word that keeps coming up about this team is 'speed' and it's evident why when you watch these guys practice. Some of the fastest young players in the world are here: Connor McDavid, Jack Eichel and Auston Matthews are a few of the most recognizable names.

The coaching staff has been busy with meetings and video sessions trying to prepare the 23 players to play at an extremely high level in just a few short days. It's challenging because a lot of information needs to be delivered and a lot of teaching needs to take place in a very short time.

Team North America is set to play our first exhibition game today vs. Team Europe, the other new team playing in the World Cup for the first time. Team Europe's roster features NHL players from eight European countries that do not have a team in this tournament. Its roster includes Coyotes forward Tobias Rieder (Germany), Boston's Zdeno Chara (Slovakia) and San Jose's Mikkel Boedker (Denmark).

Today's exhibition game, at the Centre Videotron, will give the coaches, players and fans a good idea of how well Team North America can compete in this tournament. Check it out on ESPN2 starting at 5 p.m. Arizona time!
